Norwegian Culture

undefined

Norway has been recognized around the world as a nordic country with many viking influences. People think that Norway is a good option where to live. It’s a place where you can find many job opportunities and improve your quality of life. Norway has beautiful winter landscapes and it’s one of the few places where you can enjoy the view of the northern lights.

Subcultures in Norway.

Although many people see Norway as a simple country with little cultural diversity, it is possible to find some pop cultures, as well as highlighting a particular tribe that goes unnoticed by many. In the case of pop cultures, it is common to know Norwegian Black Metal as a quite prominent movement among Norwegians, especially in youth groups, who used this type of music to revive the memories of their ancestors using satanic techniques that encouraged atheism in Norway and thus influenced their followers to adopt violent behaviors. Eventually, this culture became more recognized for the large number of crimes and deaths attributed to its followers, than for its artistic ideologies. On the other hand, we can find a large number of people belonging to the Raggare subculture, which is related to the greaser subculture of United States of America. So they love the 1950s American pop culture, and American cars. These cars are typically old or classic, and are modified changing their engines for bigger ones in order to get more speed, they are called hot rods. They are influences for a movie called Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean. Because of their partly rural origin, their retro aesthetics, and their unusual pro-American stance, the Raggare are often seen by the Nordic community as a «White Trash», with bad taste and a tawdry attitude towards sex. Last but not least, it is important to highlight the Sami subculture as a representative tribe of Norway commonly known as «the guardians of the Arctic». This tribe is a faithful lover of the polar nature, whose members have their own language, gastronomy and customs. Exiled by the Vikings, the members of the Sami tribe became nomads, dedicated to reindeer herding, fruit gathering and fishing. The word «Sami» means «united people» which alludes to the main characteristic of their community and how nice these people can be.

Colombia vs Norway: Culture

According to Lewis model, Colombia and Norway can be classified in different groups because of their cultures. Firstly, Colombians belong to multi-active group. They are warm and emotional people, who are talking most of the time usually using a lot of body language and promoters of personal relationships. Nevertheless, Norwegians’ culture is so different in contrast to the Colombians’ one, they belong to linear-active group which means they are serious and organized people, who follow their plans step by step and separates business and personal life.

On the other side, according to Hofstede model, Colombia and Norway can be compared through different facts. The most important aspect is about masculinity, that shows a low percent for Norway which means they have an interest for common welfare and improve as a society. Although they show a high percent on individualism fact in contrast to Colombians that usually are warmer and more charismatic. These are the most noticeable differences.

To conclude, as a personal point of view, I may say that Norwegians’ is the best option to build an ideal society. However a society is not only for following a linear plan, because sometimes you need feelings to live an exciting life. So, definitely I like the Norwegians’ organization but I prefer Colombians’ personality.

GENDER STEREOTYPES

Although Colombia and Norway are geographically and culturally different countries, both have major problems with gender stereotypes. Beginning with the erroneous idea they have about women; on the one hand the Colombian women, who are idealized as women with voluptuous bodies and the Norwegian women described as beautiful blonde and blue-eyed women, to finally both have great popularity on a sexual level. On the other hand, men have also been criticized, firstly Colombians described as lazy men for work and also as people who are too noisy. However, Norwegians are presented as macho men and heavy drinkers. All this has served as justification for campaigns to change these ideologies in both countries.

¿A qué te dedicas?
